Tell us about why you started your business and which one of your websites was your first website?

natural soap products

I have always dreamed of owning my a business, so when I lost my job for being so ill during my 3rd pregnancy, I decided to make a go at making money from home. I started with selling on ebay, that was very fun and profitable. Then I joined a direct sales business and worked that for the next 3 years. I started my first website lemondropshop.com in 2003, it is not active now but I still have the domain name that directs to my main website so I wouldn’t lose those who bookmarked me and I have this feeling someday I am going re-open it;) I love lemons!

Can you also tell us briefly about the various websites you run?

  • http://www.naturallydelightful.com is my natural based business for selling my handcrafted herbal pillows and items as well as offering natural/healthy living information.
  • http://www.momsbusinessnetwork.com is a fairly new free membership site that offers a directory for business moms to list their business in, a private forum for members to network, and work at home resources.
  • http://www.madebymomsboutique.com is an online boutique site showcasing mom’s handcrafted items. This site uses a unique shopping cart software that enables customers to make purchases from more than one shop within the boutique but have only one check out process. This is a great option for moms who do not have their own websites to start selling their goods online. It is also extra promotion for those who do have websites.
  • http://www.momsinbusiness.org I am the founder and president of a local networking group for moms with home/small businesses and this is our website that I maintain.

Every website of yours has a blog associated with it. In your opinion how important are blogs for businesses these days?

Blogs are a great way to keep customers informed of updates an happenings in your business as well as turning readers into customers. Great for developing relationships without pushing sales on the readers and staying connected to them.

  • http://robinlemon.com is my main blog where I can share all aspects of my home business and other interests of mine..
  • http://www.naturallydelightful.com/blog is not used for journaling but is being used to manage my content. I post all of my natural based business articles to it and then link to them from my main site.
  • http://www.momsbusinessnetwork.com/blog was created to offer work at home resources to business moms that are not yet members of the network and also to get members of the network to interact by blogging and commenting.
  • http://www.momsinbusiness.org/blog is used to post updates on our group and one of the member benefits is to be able to blog about your business on this blog for more exposure.

You have four kids. You have multiple websites and you probably are running each one like a separate business. Now how do you do it all? Do you work on all sites every week or do you have a site for a week?

I have a monthly, weekly and daily routine. For example: week one of my monthly routine is to add new content to my sites. Then I plan out my week ahead of time Monday- download content and review it, Tuesday- edit it, Wednesday- publish it on the appropriate sites, blogs, etc… Then when I am planning my daily schedule I have a designated time in my day that I strictly work on this project. I just implemented this system last month and it is working great for me, thanks to Carrie Lauth, www.carrielauth.com for sharing her system. Otherwise I would probably still be overwhelmed trying to fit everything in everyday!

What are some of the ways you promote your websites? How do you get the word out there?

I change my email signature frequently to make it more noticeable, announcing something current going on it entices more to click. I network online and off by participating in networking groups, I comment on other blogs and I Twitter. I list my business in any appropriate directory that I can find and I don’t pay for much of my advertising. I write press releases when I have an event. I have put myself there enough to get newspaper interviews about my business.

If you had a chance to do it all over again (in business) is there anything you would do differently?

I don’t think so. Even if some things didn’t work out for me or cost me too much money and time in my business they were all learning experiences that I needed to get where I am. I would have started using a coach sooner though, it is well worth the money to invest in.

Finally, your five keys to business success?

  1. ALWAYS having goals and dreams wrote or displayed in front of me
  2. Having a business plan and passion for it
  3. Continually educating myself
  4. Networking
  5. Balance and organization.
