What is “HomeBasedWorkingMoms”?

Home Business Ideas And Opportunities image Home-Based Working Moms™ (www.HBWM.com) is a professional association and online community of parents who work at home and those who would like to. HBWM members receive a monthly (print) newsletter, free advertising options, Mom-Owned Business directory listing, national publicity opportunities, free t-shirt and bumper sticker, email discussion list, message boards, support, networking, information, & more!

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I started HBWM after starting my own home business in public relations and seeing the need for networking and support for all home-based working moms. I talked to many other moms who were very interested in working from home, but weren’t sure how to start or what to do. I felt there was a need for an association to help parents share information, network and support one another. With this knowledge and my past association experience, I launched Home-Based Working Moms in 1995. HBWM has been growing ever since. We have attracted national media attention in numerous newspapers, magazines and broadcast programs.

What was your main motivation behind starting your own business?

I desperately wanted to be at home after I had my first child. I was determined to make it work no matter what. It was that passion that fueled my desire to help other moms create lifestyles that enable them more freedom and flexibility to truly enjoy their family and their life as well. I started the national association of Home-Based Working Moms (www.HBWM.com) in 1995 to create a place to help these moms learn and grow.

Achieving work life balance is always tough for a mother with a business. How do you plan your day? What are your time management tips for mothers with businesses who are trying to juggle work and home lives?

  • Do use a time management planner with to-do lists to plan your day, prioritize your tasks and keep you on track.
  • Don’t procrastinate. Begin your work day on time and don’t allow the phone or household responsibilities keep you from your work. Plan all of your errands, housework and other personal responsibilities for one day of the week if possible.
  • Do periodically review of how you are spending your time. Make sure each aspect of your life is getting the attention it needs. That includes: taking good care of yourself, your health, your faith, spouse, children, your business, home, hobbies, etc. Spend time each day with your children and spend time each evening just with your spouse.
  • Don’t continually sacrifice time with your spouse or your children to work on your business. If you are constantly over-extended or over-worked, decide where you need help. You may need to outsource some work or hire a virtual assistant, a babysitter, a housekeeper or ask for help from your family.
  • Don’t allow your business to consume you. You can only do so much in one day. Don’t be afraid to say no to things you don’t have time for.
  • Do hire a babysitter or enroll your child in preschool or a Mother’s Day Out program if they are with your during your work time.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learned over time?

It takes dedication and a delicate balance to start and grow your business without neglecting yourself, your faith or your family. As your business grows, it demands more time so it is important to have a plan. You may need to hire outside help for childcare, your housework and/or hire an assistant. It is important to keep track of where you are spending your time so that you keep your priorities in order. Bottom line is nothing should be as important as your faith and your family.

Finally, your five keys to success?

    1. Put God first, family second and your business third. Keep your priorities in order.
    2. Periodically review where you are in your business and personal life and make adjustments as necessary to meet your goals and keep your life balanced.
    3. Have a genuine interest in helping people. It shows in your product or service and in your attitude. Help others succeed and they will help you succeed.
    4. Have awesome customer service. Go the extra mile to make your customers love doing business with you.
    5. Find a business that you truly love. Only then will you find true success.
